Sephora launched their Sephora Sun Safety Kit 2016 online here. I have tried, tested and researched this kit to share you my experience. All new Sephora coupons June 2016 will also be listed. You will see all textures and shades of all these products in this post. Every year Sephora releases their Sephora Sun Safety Kit in summer (regularly in May). It is a multibrands set full of tons of sunscreen, sun care and SPF beauty samples. There is no subscription required. This set is always the greatest value and the most popular of all Sephora Favorites. This set always sell out really quick. Every year Sephora will donate part of the sale to charity. This year, Sephora will donate $20 from the sale of this kit to the Skin Cancer Foundation!

Dr. Jart+ Premium Beauty Balm SPF 45 Light-Medium Review | Full size $39, available in 2 shades

A one-step balm that perfects the appearance of skin while protecting it from the sun and environmental factors.

IcanGWP: This is one of my favorite item in this kit. Formula is top notch – rich blend of beneficial goodies (even peptide), board spectrum mineral sunscreen, skin lightening and fragrance free. I am immediately struck by how this gem make me look and feel. It is so light. Somehow they manage to have sheer to medium coverage. This product gives flawlessly matte finish. The average review on Sephora site is 4.5. People really love it. They replace their foundation with this product and also think that this is the best BB in the market. It is also an ideal BB for sensitive skin. You will see the shade and texture below.

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Dark Spot Sun Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Review | Full size is $42

An antiaging sunscreen cream with a state-of-the-art antioxidant complex to help prevent damage from UVA/UVB rays, protect against photo-aging, and even skin’s texture and tone.

IcanGWP: The average review is 3.5. This mineral sunscreen has a light pleasant citrus scent but it does fade quickly. It has semi-matte finish. I agree with most reviewers that there’s no white cast. There are two forms of vitamin C in it for dark spot corrector. It is an okay option.

Coola Makeup Setting Spray SPF30 Review| Full size is $36

A 70 percent certified organic SPF 30 spray that provides a weightless matte-finish while keeping makeup looking fresh all day.

IcanGWP: The average review on Sephora site is 3.8. People love that this setting spray helps their makeup last all day with added sunscreen! But they also think that it has high alcohol content and weird fragrance so it won’t be for everyone. No grease, it has matte finish when dry. It is so convenient and easy to use. FYI – All inactive ingredient list is presented in alphabetical not descending order.

Supergoop! Defense Refresh Setting Mist SPF 50 Review| Full size $28, Travel size $12

An innovative three-in-one mist that sets makeup, helps control oil and shine, and refreshes your defense against photoaging UV rays with an uplifting scent of rosemary and mint.

IcanGWP: It dries stickier feel compare to famous Urban Decay Setting Spray. In terms of makeup setting, Urban Decay and Coola are outperformed this one. The average review is 3.3. It contains a lot of fragrance and alcohol. I think that the convenient way to use any setting spray with SPF is for reapplying your sunscreen and refreshing your makeup during the hot humid day. You will see the mist results from these two makeup setting spray below in the test.

MDSolarSciences Mineral Crème Broad Spectrum SPF 50 UVA-UVB Sunscreen Review | Full size $50, Travel size $30

A lightweight, broad-spectrum SPF 50 mineral sunscreen with antioxidant benefits and a silky smooth finish that is gentle enough for sensitive skin. This SPF 50 mineral sunscreen offers broad-spectrum protection in an 80-minute water-resistant formula that you can barely tell is there. It can be worn alone, over makeup, or under foundation as a face primer.

IcanGWP: The average review is 4.3. This science-look and feel sunscreen deserves their price tag. It is a fragrance free, water resistant, board spectrum, mineral sunscreen. This rich sunscreen has silky texture but greasy finish. It will work well under makeup or doubles as a primer except for very oily skin! The amount of zinc oxide 17% may leave white-ish cast, experiment and play with it! The water resistant part may also make you feel like it sits on the skin. It doesn’t clog pores. Similar to Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ Wetforce For Face you will need to clean these water-resistant formula sunscreens really well. This should be a good option for sensitive skin to try.

Clarins Sunscreen Multi-Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Review | Full size $42

A versatile sunscreen to protect from UVA/UVB rays, pollution, and free radicals while improving skin’s texture and tone.

IcanGWP: This board spectrum sunscreen is lightweight. It is so silky and smells lovely that I can’t believe it’s a sunscreen. It leaves slightly shine on my skin. It’s a comfortable wear sunscreen (not as much as Dr Jart+ or Algenist). They changed formula past winter from mineral sunscreen to in-part mineral. I think they wants to fix white cast problem, and they accomplished that! FYI – It does clog pores a little bit (for me). Some retailers call it Clarins UV Plus Anti-Pollution Broad Spectrum SPF 50 (may be the previous formula, Clarins fans please confirm).

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30 PA+++ Review | Full size $65 – $80

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield brings you flawless, fabulous skin in a single step. The invisible skin-perfecting shield replaces your treatment, primer and SPF to immediately blur and correct while combating signs of aging. Mushroom peptides treat lines and wrinkles by helping aid regulation of collagen and elastin while a soft-focus complex smoothes and blurs imperfections for improved tone and texture.

How to use: Massage evenly over face, neck and chest. May be applied under makeup or worn alone.

IcanGWP: This product is so unique: 3-in-1 primer, sunscreen and moisturizer. It has a silky gel-like texture. It goes on smooth like primer. Once it is dried, it doesn’t leave any grease on the skin like most sunscreen. I think that oily/combination skin may give this product a try. For those with sensitive skin, there’s fragrance in it. In terms of sun protection, it might not be enough for a long day. I have read somewhere that we have to use so much to cover our face. It will ball up if I use that much, just so you know. There is a brand new product from Cover FX that do the same thing as this one here.

NOTE: For IcanGWP men readers, gel sunscreen is the best option for area with body hair (like arms, beards). See Gel Sunscreen search results at Sephora or Nordstrom.

St. Tropez Tanning Essentials In Shower Gradual Tan | Full size is $25 available in 2 shades

An innovative self-tan lotion used in the shower to deliver a natural-looking, buildable glow.

The most convenient way to tan—simply apply in shower and rinse in just three minutes. Great for all skintones and types, it delivers a natural-looking, bronze glow and extreme moisture without streaking or transferring onto clothing. It is made with a 100 percent natural DHA and infused with sweet almond oil to nourish the skin for a smooth, soft, hydrated finish. Use daily to gradually build an intense tan.

For best results, use for three or more consecutive days. If you are looking to achieve a deeper tan, it’s important to not skip a day between applications since the color builds after each use. For an even darker glow, leave the lotion on your skin for up to five minutes before washing off. Apply generously as you can never over apply. This product is an Allure Best of Beauty award winner.

North Americas do not have indication for UVA yet. But you can look for the ingredients like: zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, avobenzone, butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, Mexoryl SX, or Tinosorb. See more sunscreen guide including what are UVA, UVB, PA++ and more in my previous post here.

Sephora Sun Safety Kit 2016 – Before and After Sunscreen Test by Using Blotting Sheets

I did my little (and simple) test for sunscreen greasiness by using blotting sheets. I am just curious. There is no scientific research related here, no lab settings. If sunscreen oiliness is your concern, it’s fun to see the result before you making decision to purchase full size products.

From 15 products in Sephora Sun Safety Kit, one is lip treatment and another is sun tan products. I end up testing 13 products. They are divided into 3 columns for mineral, in-part mineral and chemical groups, respectively, according to their active ingredients.

BEFORE: Here is Sephora Sun Safety Kit 2016 sunscreen products illustration on blotting papers right after I put it on. This is probably how we will notice right after we applied it.

Mineral Sunscreen Group: Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Dark Spot Sun Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50 and Tarte Tarteguard 30 Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF30 do an excellent job, both BB are doing well but MDSolarscience seems to contain quite a bit of oil.

In-Part Mineral Sunscreen Group: Algenist Sublime Defense Anti-Aging Blurring Moisturizer SPF 30 result may be a little bit misleading because it absorbs immediately.

Chemical Sunscreen group: Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30 PA+++ is clear gel and no obvious oil soaks through the blotting paper (may be a little bit difficult to see). Kate Somerville Daily Deflector™ Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ and Peter Thomas Roth Max Sheer All Day Moisture Defense Lotion SPF 30 Sunscreen Lotion are unbelievable! The Supergoop sample bottle builds a way finer mist compared to Coola.

AFTER: Here is Sephora Sun Safety Kit 2016 sunscreen products illustration on blotting papers one hour later. I left them in the afternoon sun. This probably indicates what will happen after we are out in the sun with this sunscreen.

Don’t let this result alter you from making the right decision. Because most sunscreen actives are oil soluble, it will be stable, works and absorbs well with some help from oil content.

Consumer Report Sunscreen Test 2016

Consumer Reports investigated 65 sunscreen products with an SPF of at least 30. A few interesting results:

The report found 43% of sunscreens failed to meet the SPF claim on their labels (e.g., SPF 50 but only tested at an SPF 8 in the experiment).
If you choose a chemical sunscreen with an SPF of 40 or higher, you have a great chance of getting at least an SPF 30.

My Final Thought

From 15 products from Sephora Sun Safety Kit 2016, these are my personal options (items in bold are more preferred):

Good options for sensitive skin (mineral actives without alcohol or fragrance) are Dr. Jart+ Premium Beauty Balm SPF 45 and MDSolarSciences Mineral Crème Broad Spectrum SPF 50 UVA-UVB Sunscreen.

Sephora makes an amazing quality sunscreen set at unbelievably affordable price. It has every SPF items you could possibly need to care for your skins – except body. It’s really hard to find which sunscreen is truly the best for your skin. All formulas are unique and you are also unique. We simply can’t always judge a product by its ingredient label or any advertising. My best advice is to check for compatibility by yourself. Sephora Favorites Sephora Sun Safety Kit is always curated new collections and new technology sun care for us every summer. I can’t tell you how much hassle this kit can save me from trying to find the right sunscreens for me and my family.

Protecting your skin from UV exposure every day is the best skin treatment at all ages. It will help speed the healing of skin, especially when you include other treatments like retinols, AHA or BHA exfoliants or acne products.
