Is this Shu Uemura eyelash curler the best eyelash curler? Here’s the detailed review! This is Shu Uemura’s best-selling, award winning, pro-favorite eyelash curler that only costs $22 at Shu Uemura USA and Shu Uemura Canada! According to IntoTheGloss, There are two big milestones in the eyelash curler’s lifespan as an invention—its creation, in 1931, and its radical improvement by a Mr. Shu Uemura some 30 years later. (Extra credit if you also wrote that the third big milestone was getting name checked by Emily Blunt and Gisele Bündchen in The Devil Wears Prada, you overachiever, you.)
I’ve tried a few others but keep coming back to this one. The best part is it hasn’t ever pinched my eyelids and it creates soft natural curls that I adore. Does it live up to the hype? I have both the Shu Uemura and Shiseido curlers and there’s real big difference in the style of the curl. I’ve measured the curvature and radius to find out how round they are to help you find the right curler. Find out more below!

Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler Review
Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler $22 — 4.8 average review from 1129 reviewers.
The iconic, best-selling and award-winning shu uemura eyelash curler featuring enhanced design and upgraded features for ultimate precision that delivers the perfect curl. The iconic shu uemura eyelash curler is one of the most famous “beauty secrets” of the industry, used by celebrities, fashion designers, and many top make-up artists because of its precise control and optimum, long-lasting curl.
Upgraded silicone pad in a new “mushroom” shape provides a protective, stay-put edge for improved safety and optimum curl. Upgraded patented hinge with precise engineering applies the perfect amount of pressure on eyelashes. Curved angle suits all eye shapes. Calculated shape and size of frame length and ergonomic handles ensure stability and control.
One refill pad included.
The eyelash curler is a makeup staple that everyone owns, yet finding the perfect one is very challenging. Here’s the review!
Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler Material
The silver material is luxury and the silicone pad is medium density, soft and of high quality.
I always prefer the loop handles because I can get really good control. It’s ergonomic and every clamp is firm but will never pinches. The bottom plate and top plate are not straight up like most curlers. They slope approximately 45-degrees if you measure from the very bottom to the most top.
I can’t imagine if this patented design could wear out and need a replacement. A $22 investment should easily last for at least 6-7 good years.
Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler Application
According to Business Insider: This curler has a patented hinge that actually works to ensure you can’t press too hard mid-pulse. It’s like a mini failsafe. No matter how hard you press, that hinge is going to make sure the pressure is evenly distributed, which cuts down on your chances of pinching.
Here’s the instruction of how to use Shu Uemura eyelash curler.
I find the handle is easy to use. I normally look slightly downward and position the curler to fit the lid. The plate’s slope is excellent. It allows us to really reach our lash line tighter. I’m trying to curl as close as possible to the root of my lashes. The curve and the slope set this Shu Uemura curler apart from others – we can clamp lashes close to the roots and get more gorgeous lift.
The silicone pad has a good width, height and good thinkness. The height responds to how much it can absorb the press and distribute it. I don’t have to put pressure to get them to curl. You don’t see the top plate’s mark on the rubber (ever) like cheaper ones.
The thickness is another thing that makes this Shu Uemura eyelash curler shine. It is way thicker than other pads. The clamp is gentler on our lashes. This prevents spider legs curl or “L-shape” curl. I’ll talk about the width below in the comparison section.
Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler Results
Shu Uemura eyelash curler gets 4.4 average review at Sephora Canada, similar to Shiseido. When Nordstrom carried Shu Uemura it got 4.6 average review while Shiseido gets 4.4.
This Shu Uemura eyelash curler bends the lashes in a natural curve going “upwards”. It looks beautiful from the front and also from the side, the way lashes should ideally be by nature. The lashes are so curly in fact that the curler fits the eye shape so well.
If you are looking for a perfect eyelash curler to use before applying false lashes, I also highly recommend Shu Uemura. It provides plenty of space on top of your lashes to fit and adjust falsies. It blends in perfectly! It is really gentle so if you often curl again when you have the false lashes on, this is a good option that may not damage your falsies.
They are not perfect, here are a few caveats. The first one I can think of is the outer lash. Sometimes, it doesn’t reach in one application compared to other shallower eyelash curlers. I’ll lean it to fit my outer lashes and do the curl again approximately 10% – 20% of the times. In addition, they discontinued the silicone pad refill. The style is also upwards only and not spanning out at the outer corner. It’s not natural to have the outer lashes pointing left and right but for some makeup styles, it’s a must. It can be easily fixed by using wet mascara formula and wiggling to adjust your lashes to span out.
Is Shu Uemura’s infamous eyelash curler a dream eyelash curler for you?
There are several opinions pointed that the Shiseido eyelash curler is too shallow or too flat. When I measured a straight line along both silicone pads from bottom left to right, it’s 26mm for Shu Uemura and 25mm for Shiseido. You can imagin Shu Uemura’s shape is more like a big U curve while shallow eyelash curlers are more like a mushroom curve – they are shallower.
I put the top clamp on the paper and traced it. Shu Uemura has 31mm width and 11mm height. It’s 32mm and 10mm for Shiseido. I calculated the radius of both clamps and silicone pads. The clamp radius Shu Uemura Vs Shiseido: 16.42mm Vs 17.80mm and for the pad: 15.02mm Vs 16.02mm. The higher the radius, the flatter or shallower the curve. The truth is the Shu Uemura curler has longer arc, more curvature and wider width.
Shu Uemura is the more curvy one in the market (Top 5 of 20). This is why it’s so popular for pro-makeup artists, it’s wide and curvy — it will fit most eye shapes well.
It depends on how round and hooded your eye is. It is not an ideal for very flat monolid + extreme long or no depth eye shape. FYI – consider Shu Uemura S Curler (famous for sectional curl), Koji or Shiseido Black Eyelash Curler I bought from Japan (see reviews here) if your eyes are in this category.
The Shu Uemura eyelash curler should fit most eyelid curvatures well while we don’t have to look down and almost close our eye like other brands.
There are zillion of ways to measure our eyes to match the right eye lash curlers. They best way for me is simply have two eye lash curlers and curl my eye lashes side by side. The results won’t lie. Here’s the big different of Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler Vs Shiseido Curler I’ve found from these experiments.
Silicone Pad: Medium Dense Vs Very Soft
Curvature: Deeper Vs Shallower
Span: Upwards Vs More upwards in the middle and outward at the corners
Pinch: Never Vs A few times
Curl shape: Natural Vs L Shape and Natural
Easy to use: Easy Vs Easy
Cost: $22 Vs $22
